Rationale
I understand that many of you have jobs, families, other courses, and a myriad of obligations. It is not easy to juggle all these responsibilities; I admire your tenacity to get an education and will help all I can.

There are two major objectives of this course (bulleted below)  Both of these objectives are negated by submission of late work.

Students will learn:

  • to write better
I am always happy to help students; however, I am not here to merely get you a good grade, nor should that be your overriding concern. It should be to become a better write which will be of great value in your college life. Assignments are basically sequential. They follow a pattern of reading, prewriting, writing, peer critiquing. Along the way I and peers provide feedback to help the writer with the next assignment. Assignments submitted late will not benefit properly form this process and only serve to fill in grades. Late work will not help a student meet this important objective.

  • to scheduling, prioritize, be punctual, and follow direction for better written results.
Assignments submitted on time and appropriately lend themselves to helpful feedback, peer input, timely corrections, and allow for possible Internet interruptions. Learning to write better occurs over time with lots of feedback and assistance along the way. Late assignments or those not meeting requirements of submission makes it difficult to receive proper and useful feedback. It doesn't help students learn to be responsible and seems to heighten expectation of preferential treatment that will not serve you well throughout your college experience.

Additionally, just as you have countless obligations, so do I. As your instructor, I allot much time and energy to this class. I have my time carefully scheduled to insure that the work you submit gets my full attention, so I can get it back to you quickly with useful feedback. I take your work seriously and give it plenty of time; however, once I am done with your class, I move to my next responsibility on my schedule. Late\emailed work is not included in my schedule and will either get lost and clog up my email, or not reach my attention until after its usefulness has expired for a subsequent assignment. It becomes an exercise in you just doing it to amass a grade which defeats my objectives for good education.

All assignments are listed, with open & close dates, on the Class Schedule on the Welcome Page to give you ample time to figure them into your schedule.
